Sunday Morning Music 4/25/2021

The new Sunday Morning Music playlist is up on Spotify! This week’s features include Lashun Pace, Albertina Walker, Tarralyn Ramsey, Ricky Dillard and New Generation Chorale, Thomas Whitfield and more!  Don’t miss it!!!

This past week, I was took myself down a trail of memories from my teens.  Every Saturday evening and Sunday morning, we would tune into WMNF, an independent station in my native Tampa Bay, where Pat Houser hosted a gospel show Saturday nights and Sunday mornings.  She always had a great mix of older songs with the newer ones in the world of traditional gospel music.  I’m pretty sure it was there that I first heard Thomas Whitfield, whose albums have been a constant in my life ever since.

Some of the other artists were regulars in the world of Bobby Jones’ Gospel Explosions which were a source of so much inspiration in the 90’s as well.  It was there that I got to witness the Queen, Albertina Walker, previewing a few tunes from her (then soon-to-be-released) Grammy winning album “Songs from the Church.”  A song from that album can also be found in this week’s playlist.

I also included Shirley Caesar’s “Have You Got Good Religion,” which is from one of her classic HOB Records releases in the 1970’s, which are being reissued by Sonorous Recordings as we speak.  Expect a blog post about that series this week!

I’d love to hear what your favorites are from this week’s playlist!  What are your memories of these artists and songs?  Feel free to comment and share with me.
